A Writer Reflects

Full disclosure, I’m a website writer, not an actual writer.

I’ve written this website for Seeds and Love Together, who have some great writers in their midst. My first blog post here is one of the last pages that I have to build. I plan to reflect on the trip that I took to Nicaragua with Seeds and Love Together (SALT.) I went down on the 2nd or 3rd trip that the organization took. Actually, it was the first trip after the organization officially became a 501 (c)(3). So, I can say I went on the first trip.

I went down with my wife Carrie, who is an excellent writer, and you can expect to read some posts from her eventually. Mel is also a great writer, and I’m sure that he will keep us all glued to our seats here. Anyway, before my first trip I was not a good missionary. I remember thinking, wouldn’t I be better off sending the $1,000 that I’m about to spend on this trip. Come to find out, this is a common rookie mistake. As we prepared for the trip, Mel started sending us information weekly, for about a month and a half leading up to the trip. Some of it was vaccination information and best practices, but other parts of it were about how to help people in a third world. I’m sure we will post those very documents here as we continue to add content, but until then, I will tell you. I remember the first thing one of the articles said was DON’T SEND CLOTHES. They already have them. Now shoes might be another story, but the point was that people send resources all the time. Don’t get me wrong here, we do need a doctor, and the people we serve don’t have much income, but they have more now than when we started and it’s not because we gave it to them. It’s because they’ve learned from us. Mel and Mike Jones, “Who is Mike Jones!” (sorry, I could not help myself. It’s a song.) Anyway, Mike Jones is a partner with Salt, who has been doing Missions in Nicaragua for a long time and my point is that the people down there are learning from these two Men of God. The Miskito people consider them friends and turn to them for advice. They might ask, Should we start a English and Spanish school. Of course, they say, and Kisalaya now has a very successful school for teaching English and Spanish, from what I hear. The list goes on. One of my favorites is… “we should put a small child on top of the well drill bit to help push it into the earth as we spin it around. Actually, they did not run that one by Mel or Mike, but it works great and the water is clean.

Wow! talk about stream of consciousness. I hope this makes sense to you. Please keep in mind that I’m just the web developer, and we will be putting up some great literature and content on our website here, along with some great, very well written blog posts. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

Thanks!
